Does the GPS tracker work without the Internet?

Does the GPS tracker work without the Internet? Yes, simple satellite location detection doesn't require an internet connection. However, transmitting the assigned position to an app on your phone usually requires the Internet or another communication channel.

This distinction is very important. The GPS module is responsible for determining where the device is located. The SIM card, mobile network, or nearby phone network is responsible for transmitting this information to the owner.

Thus, the locator can know its position without the Internet, but the user will not always be able to see it remotely in real time.

Do I need GPS internet?

The GPS system uses signals sent by satellites. The receiver located in the locator analyzes these signals and calculates its position.

You don't need an internet connection to calculate coordinates easily. The same rule applies in car navigation with previously loaded maps. The device can capture the position even if the phone doesn't have an active data packet.

However, without network access, another problem occurs:how should location information be sent to an owner located several kilometers away?

The locator must use a specific communication channel. Depending on the device, it can be:

  • mobile network,
  • SMS message,
  • Bluetooth,
  • Wi-Fi,
  • a network of compatible phones located nearby.

Why do I need a SIM card in the locator?

The SIM card is not used to receive the GPS signal. Its task is to connect the locator to the cellular network.

The scheme of work most often looks like this:

  1. The GPS module detects the position,
  2. the locator records coordinates,
  3. the cellular module transmits data over the network,
  4. the server passes information to the application,
  5. the owner sees the position on the map.

Using a SIM card, the locator can also transmit route history, notifications, and alerts. Without an active connection, some of this data may be stored in the device's memory, but it will not be visible remotely until the connection is restored.

An example of a device that uses GPS and cellular communication is StealthTrack™Magnetic GPS Tracker.

Why does the app need data transfer?

The app on your phone does not connect directly to the locator satellites. It receives information stored on the server or receives it from the device over the network.

Data transmission is required for:

  • displaying the current position,
  • updating the map,
  • uploading your trip history,
  • getting alerts,
  • changes to some of the settings,
  • manage multiple devices.

It is necessary to distinguish the Internet used by the locator from the Internet on the owner's phone. Both devices must be able to communicate, although they do not always use the same carrier or connection type.

When the locator temporarily loses cellular network coverage, it may stop sending new positions. This does not automatically mean GPS crashes. When the range is restored, the device can start transmitting data again.

Does Smart tag work differently?

Yes. Smart tag usually doesn't use its own SIM card. It transmits a Bluetooth signal that is detected by the owner's phone or other compatible device located nearby.

If a lost item is nearby, you can beep or use the tips available in the app. When a tag is far away, its position can be updated using another phone belonging to the location network.

Here's how it works mini lokalizator smart StealthTrack™.

Smart tag does not need its own Internet package, but the ability to find it from a distance depends on the availability of compatible devices. For this reason, the tag is great for keys and luggage, but it doesn't always replace a complete GPS tracker for your car.

Which locator should I choose without a fixed fee?

The term "no subscription" can mean several different things. The device can:

  • don't have a mandatory monthly subscription,
  • use a periodically paid card,
  • have a data packet attached for a certain period of time,
  • work via Bluetooth and a network of other devices,
  • you only need to replace or charge the battery.

Before purchasing, check not only the "no subscription" password, but also the communication method and possible cost of data transfer.

For more information, see the manual GPS tracker without a subscription-how does it work and when does it cost?.

Smart tag is a good option for keys, wallet, and luggage. For a vehicle whose route you want to monitor regularly, it is better to choose a locator with a cellular connection.

Resume

The GPS tracker can determine your position without the internet, because it uses satellite signals. However, a network connection is most often required to upload an item to the app and allow the owner to view it remotely.

The SIM card does not replace GPS. It is responsible for data transmission. Smart tag works differently because it uses Bluetooth and a network of compatible devices.

Before selecting, check available GPS trackers and compare the way the device works with whether you want to protect your car, luggage, keys, or branded equipment.
